Saffron, a expensive spice used in food, dye, and pharmaceutical industries, is being sold as imitation and adulterated form by some manufacturers, according to Ali Manavoğlu, Head of the Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Food Engineers. The genuine saffron, which is produced in countries like Iran, Azerbaijan, Greece, Italy and France, is difficult to produce and sells for 80 thousand liras per kilogram. Manavoğlu warned consumers about the danger of buying fake saffron, which can be disguised as coconut, corncob, or horsehair, and emphasized the genuine saffron's high value due to its rarity and the extensive labor involved in its production.
