Tridge summary

Since mid-to-late August, local kiwifruits in Chengdu have begun to be available on the market, presenting a stark contrast in price compared to imported kiwifruits. In late August, the retail price for a 500-gram box of imported New Zealand kiwifruits in fruit stores was 20 yuan (equivalent to 20 yuan per jin), while local kiwifruits were priced at 15 yuan per jin, which is 25% cheaper. After a large quantity came onto the market in early September, prices began to decrease.

According to the introduction, the kiwifruit planting area in Chengdu reaches 280,000 acres, mainly distributed in Pujiang, Dujiangyan, and Qionglai. Among these, Dujiangyan has a planting area of 103,000 acres, accounting for 37% of the city's total. Despite the recent changeable weather, through scientific management, this year's total production is expected to reach 350,000 tons, a 7% increase compared to last year.

A person in charge from Pengzhou Yurun Market revealed that since August, kiwifruit sales have exceeded 700 tons, with a procurement increase of over 20% compared to the previous two months. Varieties such as "Hongyang" and "Donghong" from Chengdu, known for their tender flesh and strong aroma, are highly favored by the market. In late August, the wholesale price for local kiwifruits was about 10 yuan per jin, which is around 30% lower than imported ones, leading to high enthusiasm among wholesalers for procurement. After a large quantity came onto the market in September, the retail price dropped to around 10 yuan per jin.

The kiwifruit planting in Chengdu has formed a complete industrial chain from seedling cultivation, planting to sales. The planting scale of 280,000 acres has diluted the unit cost. It is understood that Chengdu kiwifruits mainly target the mid-to-high-end market. Sichuan is the second-largest kiwifruit production area in the country, with Chengdu as the core production area, where red-flesh and yellow-flesh varieties account for 60% of the province's total. About 35% of Chengdu's kiwifruits are sold locally, while the remaining 65% are sold to major domestic cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, and some are exported, mainly to Southeast Asia (such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia) and Central Asian countries. The sweetness and storage resistance of Chengdu kiwifruits make them particularly suitable for long-distance transportation—the "Donghong" variety can be stored for 4-5 months under 1°C conditions, with a shelf life of over 15 days. In 2024, Dujiangyan exported nearly 1,000 tons of kiwifruits, with an export value of over 4 million US dollars. In February 2025, Dujiangyan exported 40 tons of kiwifruits to the UAE for the first time. So far this year, Dujiangyan kiwifruits have secured over 800 tons of overseas orders.
