Netherlands: A loaf of bread has become 10 percent more expensive in a year

The average bread price has risen about 10 percent in a year. This is evident from figures that NU.nl has requested from Statistics Netherlands. For a fine wholemeal bread without seeds and kernels, you now pay between 2.75 and 2.95 euros at the real baker. And according to the Dutch Bread and Pastry Bakers Entrepreneurs Association (NBOV), bread prices will rise rather than fall. "The end of the price increases is not yet in sight," says chairman Arend Kisteman of the organization to which artisan bakers are affiliated. "Wheat prices are falling again, but all other costs are rising." To some extent, the bakers cannot avoid passing on cost increases. "We can never fully compensate for the extremely increased energy prices, then another 1 euro would be added," says Kisteman.
