A new pest, the apricot aphid, has been identified in Hungary and is spreading rapidly, causing significant damage to apricot trees. The aphid is of Far Eastern origin and can also spread viruses, making healthy plants infected. The aphids cause leaves to drift and fall off in spring, and by mid-June, they move to summer host plants. Experts recommend reviewing and introducing spring aphid treatment. Current chemical plant protection against aphids is authorized in Hungary for cultivation, while organic gardeners can use oil treatments and potassium soap spraying. Researchers at the MATE Institute of Plant Protection are studying the distribution and significance of the apricot aphid in Hungary, aiming to develop efficient, environmentally friendly plant protection methods.
