The Ukrainian market primarily relies on domestically produced traditional cereals, with the exceptions of rice and buckwheat, which are commonly imported. Buckwheat imports have varied, with some retail chains sourcing from Kazakhstan and Russia due to production interruptions in Ukraine. The recent surge in cereal prices and export restrictions by Russia and Belarus have stimulated interest in buckwheat cultivation in Ukraine. Rice, being less locally produced, is mainly imported from countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Pakistan, and India, with some smuggling activities reported. Ukrainian cereal market also includes products imported from Poland and Turkey, repackaged locally. UkrAgroConsult estimates that about 30% of Ukraine's cereal production is shadowy, dominated by small farmers and individuals who mainly sell their produce through local bazaars and fairs. The production of traditional cereals is seeing a decline in Ukraine, while oat and corn groats, which are in demand abroad, are half-produced for export.
