Malaysia has introduced new regulations for importing fresh longan fruit from Thailand, effective from April 1, 2024. These regulations require exporters to provide a certificate of analysis (COA) showing that the fruit does not contain sulfur dioxide and Carbendazim residues exceeding the Malaysian standards. This measure is in response to the detection of excess residues in over 9,089 tons of longans imported from Thailand, worth over 270 million baht, in 2023. For exporters not on the Watch List, random inspections will be conducted. If non-compliant, they will be added to the Watch List and future exports must include the required COA. This move aims to ensure the import of longans that meet the necessary standard, with potential for stricter import controls if necessary.
