The Association of chestnut growers of the three valleys in El Bierzo Oeste has raised concerns about the premature defoliation of chestnut trees due to the socarrina fungus and a new fungus, Gnoniopsis smithogilvyi, which has been confirmed in almost 80% of the samples. This fungus internally affects the chestnut, altering its organoleptic quality. The Bierzo chestnut table has activated a phytosanitary surveillance program and is evaluating possible solutions, including rapid harvest management and thermal treatment. Cesefor expects to launch a service for early detection of pathologies in agriculture and forestry, which may be extended to all productions.
