Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the resulting unavailability of around 400,000 tons of sunflower oil, the Spanish fat market is experiencing significant disruption. With Ukraine's sunflower planting expected to be lost for at least 1.5 to 2 years, prices of sunflower oil have surged by up to 300%, and alternatives like olive pomace and refined olive oils are also becoming increasingly expensive. The situation has prompted calls for the increased bottling of olive oil, which is not only abundant in Spain but also considered healthier and more stable than other oils. The proposal aims to reduce reliance on imported oils and support the sustainability of olive groves in Spain.
