The Agriculture & Food Authority (AFA) in Kenya is starting inspections to ensure the safety of all food consumed in the country, with a crackdown on dangerous chemicals used in growing vegetables and transported to urban areas. Acting Director General Harsama Kello expressed concern about chemicals rejected in exported food finding their way into the local market and the potential link to the rise in cancer cases. The AFA will collect samples from markets for testing, and those found with harmful chemical residues will be prosecuted. The authority will also work with other government agencies to ensure food grown in cities is safe and educate the public on food safety.
