Aflatoxin-contaminated figs were converted into biogas energy

Aflatoxin-contaminated dried figs, one of the biggest problems for Aydın's national fruit, were converted into biogas energy through a prepared project. It was noted that this study was deemed worthy of the 'Sustainability Award' at the 42nd International Dried and Nuts Congress in Spain and was evaluated as a global model. Turkey leads the world in dried fig production and export, carrying out more than 60% of global production and export. The Sarılop variety grown in the Aegean Region is in high demand from many countries, including the European Union, USA, China, and Japan. The Aegean Exporters Association announced that despite a challenging year, 63,000 tons of dried fig exports to over 100 countries in the 2024-2025 season brought $337 million in foreign currency to the country.
