The explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in 2023 caused a catastrophic impact on Ukraine's agricultural sector, particularly affecting the southern regions with the destruction of the main irrigation system. This incident severeley damaged one of the largest irrigation systems in the country, reducing the irrigated land area from over 500 thousand hectares to a mere 15 thousand hectares, a 95% decrease. The agricultural production has seen a significant drop, with grain, oilseed crops, and vegetables being severely affected. The financial losses are estimated in the millions, and the recovery will require substantial investment to update and modernize the majority of Ukraine's outdated irrigation infrastructure.
