Economist Rusli Abdullah from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) has urged the Indonesian government to create a cluster of commodities for small farmers. He explained that many agricultural commodities already have a market share but are not being optimally utilized due to the fragmented nature of Indonesia's agricultural sector. Rusli stressed the need for industrialization of agricultural commodities to produce derivative or ready-to-use products. He proposed that this clustering should be sustainable and supported by local governments and the Ministry of Agriculture. Using palm sugar as an example, he pointed out that despite its high global market demand, farmers in Indonesia are still disconnected, with small economies of scale.
