Zimbabwe is rapidly emerging as a significant player in the global blueberry industry, with production reaching 8,000 metric tons in the 2023/2024 season. The country now ranks 13th among the world's largest blueberry exporters, a feat achieved since its first exports in 2017. Despite challenges like limited financing, lack of government support, and infrastructure issues, the horticulture industry contributes over $100 million annually to the economy and holds the potential to generate revenues similar to the sector's peak in the 1990s. The industry faces hurdles such as water scarcity and reliance on Durban as the main export hub. To achieve its expansion goals, the industry needs significant investment, improved land tenure security, and partnerships with foreign investors. Sustainable water management practices are crucial for long-term growth.
