Animal welfare organization, AnimaNaturalis, has called for specific legislation for rabbit farms, which make up the third largest source of meat in Europe but are currently not regulated beyond basic animal welfare requirements like water and food availability. An investigation by the organization revealed harsh conditions in rabbit farms, with animals kept in cramped cages and subjected to intensive farming practices. Reproductive mothers are artificially inseminated multiple times a year, while offspring are sent to slaughter at a young age, with a high mortality rate. The organization emphasizes that consumption of rabbit meat is on the decline in Spain and Europe due to its high cost and increasing perception of rabbits as pets rather than food.
