Environmental non-profit BLOOM has filed an appeal with the European Commission and the French Directorate General for Maritime Affairs, Fisheries and Aquaculture (DGAMPA) against the EU and France for obstructing ocean protection in the Indian Ocean. The appeal is in response to the EU and France's opposition to a decision by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) to partially ban 'Fish Aggregating Devices' (FADs) for part of the year. BLOOM argues that the EU's actions undermine the Common Fisheries Policy and the principles of biodiversity conservation. The IOTC's resolution, which aims to protect tuna populations and fragile marine ecosystems, has been undermined by the EU's and France's objections, rendering the ban ineffective for most French and Spanish-owned vessels operating in the Indian Ocean.
