A report by the Aragonese Network of Extensive Crops and Legumes has highlighted a significant increase in the cultivation of sunflower crops in Aragon and Spain in 2022. The area dedicated to sunflower cultivation rose to 26,500 hectares from 13,626 hectares, largely due to second plantings. Miguel Gutiérrez, a expert at the Aragón Agri-Food Transformation Center, explains that this surge is attributed to farmers' need to offset fixed expenses, as they opt for alternative crops when they cannot grow corn. In Aragon alone, the sunflower area for second planting grew to 7,799 hectares from 2,264 hectares, accounting for 33% of the total sunflower cultivation in the region.
