The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has been allocated $500 million to prevent and control African Swine Fever (ASF), a disease that poses no risk to humans but is highly contagious and deadly to pigs. This funding, provided by the USDA Commodity Credit Corporation, is the largest amount ever allocated to combat a single animal disease in advance. The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has been working with the USDA and Congress to secure additional funding and implement measures to protect the swine industry from ASF, which was recently detected in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In response, APHIS has requested a quarantine zone designation for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands from the World Organization for Animal Health, and has suspended the shipment of certain products from these areas to prevent the spread of ASF.
