The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-APHIS) has proposed a rule for the importation of Chilean table grapes using the Systems Approach, an alternative to methyl bromide fumigation. This approach, welcomed by the Chilean industry, requires fruit inspection before export. The proposal could benefit table grape growers in northern Chile, where pest control is satisfactory. In the 2021-2022 season, Chile exported 609,662 tons of table grapes, with some originating from pest-controlled regions in Atacama and Coquimbo.
