At least 70% of Bolivian quinoa production is sold to Peru because prices are more favorable in the Peruvian market due to scarcity of the harvest, with the price of quinoa ranging between 650 and 680 bolivianos per quintal. Exporting to Peru is considered the best option for producers, but there are calls for the "immediate closure" of the border to stop the smuggling of quinoa from Bolivia to Peru. Bolivia is facing a potential "production crisis" due to unfavorable climatic conditions, while Peru remains a global supplier of quinoa with exports reaching around US$90 million, primarily to the United States, Canada, and various European countries.
