Every February, the National Wheat Festival is held in the town of Leones, Córdoba. The first festival took place in 1947, at the dawn of Peronism, when wheat was by far the main crop in Argentina, but it was officially declared the National Wheat Festival in 1956, so this year is celebrating its 70th edition. Over the decades, wheat lost its top spot to soybeans first and now to corn, but it still holds a place of importance. But it was not just the merit of other crops but also the result of the brutality of Argentina's agricultural policy. That is why in 2006, when the 50th anniversary was celebrated, the festival coincided with the beginning of the closure of exports and the public appearance of a character who would wreak havoc on all agricultural activities in the name of defending the "table of the Argentines."
