In 2022, Australian feedlots played a pivotal role in the beef supply chain, accounting for a record 47% of total cattle slaughter. Domestic cattle penning capacity saw an increase of 5.5%, providing space for 1.532 million head in Q4 2022. A total of 2.74 million cattle were finished in pens, setting a record as 47% of the total slaughter. This shift towards grain-fed beef represents a significant change from the 10-year average of 38% and is anticipated to result in a higher supply of grain-finished cattle in 2023.
