Australian weaners are making half of what similar age cattle are making in some parts of Europe, according to a national and European cattle price analysis. Saleyard prices for weaner cattle in Australia are trending approximately 50% lower than prices in countries such as Ireland and the United Kingdom. In Ireland, prices for weaner bulls are 56% ahead of Australian prices, and weaner heifer prices are 92% ahead. This is due to a strong demand for commercially bred young cattle for live export from Ireland, with the number of live cattle traded during 2024 surpassing 310,000 head. In the UK, weaner bull prices are 538 cents a kilogram, and weaner heifer prices are 550 cents a kilogram.
