Avian flu outbreak detected in Don Benito (Badajoz) after death of several geese

The National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza in Algete has confirmed the presence of avian flu in geese in the municipality of Don Benito. These birds were found dead on the Doña Blanca estate, and as a result, official veterinary services from the Veterinary Office of Don Benito took the relevant samples, which tested positive, according to the Extremadura Regional Government. Although this is the first detected outbreak of avian flu in wild birds in Extremadura this year, the same sources have pointed out that, for now, "there are no signs of outbreaks in poultry." The detected subtype, H5N1, does not have a significant zoonotic capacity, meaning its ability to transmit to humans is very limited.
