Russia has imposed a ban on the import of pomegranates and peppers from Turkey, effective from November 16, 2021. The decision was announced recently and has caught the export industry off-guard, particularly as it is the peak season for these commodities. The Western Mediterranean Exporters' Association (BAIB) in Turkey has labeled the move as political and emphasized that the reasons given for the ban, such as harmful substances and pesticide residues, are unjustified. In 2021, Turkey's exports of pomegranates and peppers to Russia amounted to 116 million dollars, making it a significant market for these products. The ban comes after the detection of harmful substances in Turkish produce and meat, and the violation of labeling regulations, further complicating the situation for exporters.
