Bangladesh is set to achieve a record maize harvest this year due to a significant shift by farmers in the northern regions from traditional crops like wheat and rice to maize. The country's maize production is projected to reach a record 6.0 million tonnes this year, fulfilling the national demand. This shift is attributed to the growing demand from the poultry, livestock, and food industries, making maize a profitable alternative for farmers. The area under maize cultivation has increased to over 0.55 million hectares, while the area under wheat cultivation has significantly decreased. The record maize harvest is expected to strengthen food security and support the development of related sectors such as poultry farming and food processing.
