Barley: weather favors progress of harvest in RS

The Conjunctural Report released by Emater/RS-Ascar on Wednesday (19) indicates that the barley harvest in Rio Grande do Sul reaches about two-thirds of the cultivated area. The institution reported that stable weather conditions until November 16 "allowed for the intensification of the operation, ensuring the quality of the grains and avoiding losses due to high humidity or deterioration." The productivity is between 3,300 kg/ha and 4,200 kg/ha, varying according to the technological level adopted on the properties. Emater highlighted that there is heterogeneity in the final quality. In areas affected by excess rainfall during grain filling, part of the production registered germination below the industry standard, which has led to the redirection to the animal feed market. According to the report, this scenario, combined with the price paid to the producer, "has discouraged the expansion of the cultivated area for the next crop."
