Brazil's beer industry has seen a surge in growth, with a record 1,383 breweries registered in 2020, marking a 14.4% increase from the previous year. This growth is driven by the rising production of craft beers, which require higher quality hops for their brewing process. However, Brazil currently relies heavily on imports for hops, accounting for 100% of its supply in 2020. In response, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) has initiated a project in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute of Cooperation for Agriculture (IICA) to explore the potential for hop production in Brazil. The project aims to identify opportunities, establish partnerships, and create a technical and economic feasibility plan for hop cultivation. The ministry also plans to support the production chain through specific action plans and production structuring programs for producer cooperatives.
