Belgium has seen a rise in the cultivation of summer cereals such as wheat and barley, which partially compensated for the decline in grains, thanks to an increase in grain and feed maize. The total crop area has grown by about 10,300 hectares, reversing a nearly 9,000-hectare drop in 2019. Despite a slight decrease of 0.5% in 2020, the potato cultivation area in Belgium remained stable with changes in regionally. Flanders experienced a 2.6% decrease, while Wallonia saw a 2.2% increase. Additionally, there was a shift from early to storage potatoes. The cultivation of sugar beet also saw a 1.2% reduction, primarily due to a decrease in the area in Wallonia.
