In Lithuania, the purchase prices for wheat are so low that some farmers find it more profitable to burn it rather than sell it, reports LRT.lt. Expert Mindaugas Rila draws attention to an advertisement by a farmer offering heating wheat on the market. According to the author of the advertisement, heating a room with wheat is more profitable than with firewood or pellets, because a ton of wheat costs 140 euros, while pellets cost 260 euros. "This seems abnormal, but the country has a surplus of grain. Can a farmer do this?" asks Rila. According to the expert, selling grain as fuel is unethical because taxpayers pay for its cultivation through subsidies provided to farmers.
