Recently, renowned global fruit breeding company Bloom Fresh launched a new variety of red grapes called Boombites. The grapes have a black exterior and deep red flesh, with high levels of anthocyanins and resveratrol.
Currently, this variety is available for a limited time at UK retailer Marks & Spencer and fresh produce e-commerce platform Ocado, with a retail price of £3 per 300g box, equivalent to approximately 29 yuan per 300g. In addition to the UK market, the new variety has also been introduced at Spain's El Corte Inglés.
It is understood that Boombites is a hybrid variety developed over 10 years, with the red flesh and high resveratrol content derived from old wine grape varieties. These old wine grape varieties have small, soft berries, and through crossbreeding with seedless, crunchy raisins, the Boombites were eventually cultivated.
Research from the University of Murcia in Spain has found that the resveratrol content in Boombites is three times that of blueberries. Additionally, researchers unexpectedly discovered that this variety has a metabolic advantage, as it has a significantly lower glucose absorption rate despite having a natural fructose content similar to that of regular grape varieties.
