Bolivia has reported its first outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza, also known as bird flu. The outbreaks, one in a farm with 35,000 birds and the other in a domestic setting with 202 birds, have spread across Latin America, leading to the death of tens of millions of birds in Europe and the United States. The virus poses a threat to the poultry industry and has the potential to transmit to humans, causing supply disruptions and increasing food prices. Outbreaks have also been reported in Colombia, Mexico, and Ecuador.
