The Bolivian government is aiming to become the world's leading producer of chia, with a goal of increasing annual revenue from the product from $27 million to $70 million. Currently, Bolivia is the second largest producer of chia with 15,000 tons per year, following Paraguay. The government is targeting the Chinese market for chia, as China has recently started importing the seed due to its high nutritional value. A team from China is expected to inspect the production sites, but the inspection has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chia is a seed rich in antioxidants, fiber, and protein.
