Bomet County in Kenya has successfully exported 84 metric tonnes of tea to Iran at a price of Sh330 ($3) per kilogramme, fetching an additional Sh90 per kilogramme above the current market price at the Mombasa Tea Auction. This export, to Tehran in June, was made possible by a High Court ruling that temporarily halted the implementation of the Tea Act 2020, which had prohibited direct tea sales to international markets. The county is now exploring opportunities to export to the Eurasian Economic Union and is encouraging local farmers to process their tea to add value and improve earnings. However, the deal has been deemed 'fake' by the Agriculture secretary, who claims no government agencies were involved and raises concerns about potential broker exploitation without full price disclosure to farmers.
