Recently, the global leading fruit breeding company Boom Fresh held its first Blueberry Open Day in Chiclayo, Peru, focusing on introducing two new blueberry varieties: Abril Blue+™ and Alessia Blue+™. Chiclayo is the capital of Peru's Lambayeque Region and one of the country's primary blueberry growing areas.
Boom Fresh primarily develops grape and cherry varieties, having cultivated popular varieties such as Cotton Candy, Sweet Sapphire, and Sweet Globe. In October 2024, Boom Fresh announced the acquisition of Peru's Inka's Berries blueberry breeding project, entering the blueberry market.
The latter has bred high-quality varieties like Abril Blue+ and Alessia Blue+, and is currently developing a series of new blueberry varieties while expanding to South American, European, and African countries. Currently, Boom Fresh's blueberry varieties include Abril Blue+™, Alessia Blue+™, Matías™, and Salvador™.
According to Boom Fresh's official website, Alessia Blue+ (variety name IBUGA001) has large, uniformly sized fruits (+16mm: 95%; +18mm: 76%), with a sweet flavor and crisp flesh. The variety is early-maturing, requires no cold hours, has a long harvest period, and can be stored for over 60 days at 0.5 degrees Celsius.
Abril Blue+ (variety name IBUGA002) features large fruits (+16mm: 94%; +18mm: 69%), with excellent flavor and firm, crisp flesh. The variety is early-maturing, requires no cold hours, has a long harvest period, and can be stored for over 60 days at 0.5 degrees Celsius.
