The Brazilian federal government has reinstated a 28% import tariff on mozzarella cheese from non-Mercosur countries, following requests from the dairy sector. The tariff had been removed in March to control inflation, but it was argued that it had actually hurt the dairy sector by creating unfair competition. The dairy sector provided technical evidence to Gecex, the Chamber of Foreign Trade, supporting the reinstatement of the tariff, citing subsidies from other countries as an unfair advantage. The government decided to reinstate the tariff after receiving these arguments, as there were no significant imports of mozzarella during the period it was zeroed.
