Bread is getting more expensive because farmers are holding onto rye.

Although the production volumes of rye are sufficient, sales on the domestic market are almost non-existent, as farmers are holding onto the rye, hoping for an increase in demand and prices. This was reported by Yuriy Duchenko, the first vice president of the All-Ukrainian Association of Bakers, to UNIAN. According to him, the production of rye this year is planned at the level of 178 thousand tons, while domestic consumption averages 175 thousand tons. "But due to the low supply, we are seeing a significant increase in the cost of rye, which directly affects the price of rye flour and bread, which it is a part of," Duchenko noted. Some enterprises are already importing rye flour, particularly from Turkey. However, the import is more expensive: if a ton of Ukrainian rye flour already costs about 18 thousand hryvnias, then Turkish rye flour costs over 20 thousand hryvnias.
