A collaboration between the Pampa del Tamarugal Indigenous Peasant Association, CONAF, and SQM has led to the creation of a 30-hectare Alfalfa Production Center in the Carmelo sector of the Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve. The project aims to improve water usage efficiency through a pioneering technified irrigation system, which involves burying tapes to hydrate the roots more effectively. The initiative also includes the planting of 500 native trees, the development of a 2,000 m3 pond, and the installation of main pipes for irrigation. The project is progressing with significant community involvement and is set to become one of the largest alfalfa plantations in northern Chile by 2024.
