The US Department of Agriculture forecasts a rice demand of 15.7 million tonnes in Africa, with Nigeria being the top market due to its high consumption. Despite accounting for only 57% of the country's rice consumption, Nigeria faces a supply deficit of three million metric tonnes. The Nigerian government is taking steps to boost rice production and improve quality, including providing farm inputs, modern rice milling machines, and modern production and processing technologies. The government's efforts, in collaboration with international agencies, aim to achieve self-sufficiency in rice production and improve living standards. The release of the high-yielding hybrid rice variety ISRIZ-9 in Senegal is a significant step towards rice transformation in sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the African Development Bank's Rice Compact project.
