The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia is working to enhance fish farming potential in the country, with a focus on the Riau Islands Province due to its vast marine fish cultivation potential worth USD 1.3 trillion. The Director General of Aquaculture, Tb Haeru Rahayu, has urged synergy to develop this sector, highlighting the potential of star pomfret cultivation. The Riau Islands, located near Singapore and Malaysia, offer opportunities for both domestic and international markets. The government is encouraging the development of aquaculture to support economic growth and the welfare of farmers, especially post-pandemic. The Riau Archipelago, which makes up 98% of its geographical location as water, is a significant area for marine fish cultivation, with grouper and snapper being high-demand exports.
