Bukele warns businessmen in El Salvador: Lower food prices or there will be problems

The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has issued a warning to companies linked to the food sector and has denounced the existence of cartels in the sector. "To the food importers, wholesalers, distributors and marketers who are doing these abuses (...): Lower food prices or there will be problems," the president said in a public appearance. "Stop abusing the Salvadoran people or don't complain later," he added, paraphrasing himself with the warning to the gangs in 2019 and referring to the open war on criminal groups unleashed by Bukele. The president has acknowledged that "some of these abuses can only result in fines or administrative sanctions," but he has warned that "they know that they are also booked for tax evasion, for bribery, for smuggling food, for smuggling food at non-border points but in blind spots, for bribing customs people, for false declarations" which are a crime.
