The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria is considering protective measures against the surge in egg imports from Ukraine, following a 400% increase in 2024. Local farmers want a complete ban on Ukrainian egg imports due to their cheaper prices, which are causing significant losses. The current import duty of 5% has failed to curb the import flow, and the cheap imports are hindering the recovery of the Bulgarian poultry industry from a bird flu outbreak in 2023 that killed 1.5 million laying hens.
