Bulgaria has around 780 registered fish farms, producing approximately 15-16 thousand tons of fish annually, with an estimated 5-6 thousand tons being produced in the gray economy. The country has approximately 1,840 ships and boats, with the BG Fish Association operating 53 of them. However, not all fishermen are registered, and not all boats are reporting their catch quantities accurately. Bulgaria also has 55 fish processing plants, with 10-15 of them not in operation. The European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMVAF), a new European green policy initiative, will continue to promote fish farming. The Bulgarian paying agency has distributed nearly BGN 1.7 million in aid to eight projects within the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Program.
