Between July and December of 2022, Peru exported 39,150 tons of sweet yellow onions, with the United States accounting for 80-85% of those exports and Europe, especially Spain, being the second largest market. The season saw high growing and shipping costs, particularly in freight, and was affected by unfavorable weather conditions that delayed the harvest by a month, leading to lower yields. Political protests in December also caused significant losses and potential phytosanitary issues for growers. The sweet onion cultivation area in Peru spans approximately 800 hectares, with Ica being the primary region for growth.
