Cameroon is aiming to become the primary wheat producer in Central Africa, having tested its own wheat seeds in Chad and Gabon, and planning to extend this to other Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) countries. The country's unique climate and experience in wheat production, along with international interest from the WecaWheat Collaborative Network following the war in Ukraine, have led to this ambition. Cameroon has developed around 50 wheat seed varieties and is testing them on nearly 300 hectares of land in Wassande, with the ultimate goal of creating a full wheat production chain to end its reliance on expensive wheat imports.
