The article highlights efforts by the Government of Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) researchers to enhance food security in northern Canada through various programs and a three-year project aimed at increasing crop production using temperate-climate season extension technologies like bioplastics and low tunnels. This research, conducted in collaboration with territorial governments and local farmers, seeks to improve vegetable production, extend growing seasons, and explore the environmental and nutritional impacts of these technologies. The team is also studying the effects on soil quality, crop yield, and pest management in different northern climates, with plans to continue collaborating with communities to develop more sustainable farming practices.
