The Government of Canada and the Province of Prince Edward Island (PEI) have unveiled a Surplus Potato Management response plan, allocating up to $40.2 million to mitigate the impact of potential U.S. market access restrictions on PEI's potato industry. This plan aims to divert surplus potatoes to processors, packers, and food banks, thereby reducing the amount to be destroyed. Producers will be reimbursed for the cost of environmentally friendly disposal. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to expedite the U.S. Department of Agriculture's risk assessment of PEI table stock potatoes and secure export approval to Puerto Rico. This strategy underscores a collaborative approach to addressing trade concerns, with a focus on finding a science-based solution to reestablish U.S. market access for PEI potatoes promptly.
