In 2023, Brazil experienced a remarkable resurgence in cassava starch production, achieving a record high in eight years with a production volume of 676.7 thousand tons, a 29% increase from the previous year. This growth, highlighted in the Cepea/Abam survey, was driven by enhanced cassava crushing activities and a higher average starch content, which together boosted industrial yield. Despite this surge in production exerting downward pressure on prices, leading to a nominal price drop of 11.6%, the industry's Gross Production Value (VBP) rose by 13.8% to R$2.83 billion. The bulk of this production was aimed at food consumption markets, though there was an increase in carryover stocks due to reduced demand. Looking ahead to 2024, the industry is optimistic, expecting a 17.5% increase in starch production.
