The Vietnamese dairy market is experiencing a surge in consumption, with per capita milk consumption doubling from 15 liters in 2010 to 27 liters in 2021, despite facing challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, economic crises, and competition. The country's production meets only 42% of its consumers' needs, necessitating imports to bridge the gap. The industry is grappling with rising costs of raw milk and other inputs, leading to reduced profit margins. Inflation and decreasing consumer income are expected to further decrease dairy product demand. Despite these challenges, the market is becoming more diverse with the introduction of plant-based milk products, milk products for the elderly, and expansion into new export markets. The market is also seeing an increase in foreign investment, with over 200 enterprises, including 40 milk producers and distributors.
