Researchers at the University of Belgrade have discovered that extract from the common mushroom, Agaricus Bisporus, can potentially serve as a natural alternative to antibiotics in combating nosematosis, a common disease in honey bees, causing digestive and metabolic disorders. The study, published in the journal Insects 2021, involved feeding bees with different concentrations of the mushroom extract and observing its effect on survival, infection, and gene expression. The results indicated that bees treated with the extract had a higher survival rate and improved food intake compared to the control group. While more research is needed, this finding suggests that the mushroom extract's immunomodulatory properties could make it a promising solution for bee health, especially with the need to find alternatives to antibiotics like fumagillin that are being phased out due to safety concerns.
