(Changwon=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Sun-gyeong = Changwon City, Gyeongnam, announced on the 22nd that it will expand the breeding base of "black soldier flies," known as environmental cleanup insects.
The city has been implementing a support program for black soldier fly breeding farms since it was selected in the insect industrialization support bidding project, which was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs last year.
Until 2026, the city will invest 1 billion won in the bidding project to support the establishment of insect production and processing facilities, among other things, for core farms and cooperative farms that are necessary for industrialization.
The existing core farms (804 square meters) are processing more than 100 tons of food waste per month.
One cooperative farm is currently constructing a new breeding facility with an area of 1,550 square meters, and another farm is in the process of establishing a new black soldier fly breeding facility in Changwon.
Black soldier flies, known as environmental cleanup insects, eat food waste in the form of grubs.
Gang Jong-sun, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, "The processing of food waste feed using black soldier flies will contribute to carbon reduction and the strengthening of the resource circulation structure."
